Top Ten Tuesday: Favourite Book Quotes

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s topic is favourite book quotes. I was born ready to do this one! I have notebooks under my bed where I write down quotes that stand out to me while reading. There were so many to choose from – the only challenge was narrowing them down. I’ll have to do a follow-up post with the quotes that got cut from this first round 🙂

“She was elusive. She was today. She was tomorrow. She was the faintest scent of a cactus flower, the flitting shadow of an elf owl. We did not know what to make of her. In our minds we tried to pin her to a corkboard like a butterfly, but the pin merely went through and away she flew.” – Jerry Spinelli, Stargirl

“‘What do you want from me?’ he asks. What I want from every person in my life, I want to tell him. More.” – Melina Marchetta, Jellicoe Road

“It’s amazing how well you can get to know a person if you actually pay attention. People are like cities: We all have alleys and gardens and secret rooftops and places where daisies sprout between the sidewalk cracks, but most of the time all we let each other see is a postcard glimpse of a floodlit statue or a skyline. Love lets you find those hidden places in another person, even the ones they didn’t know were there, even the ones they wouldn’t have thought to call beautiful themselves.” – Hilary T. Smith, Wild Awake

“I could never leave. Because I think people must be the same everywhere. Only these people are my bones.” – Jodi Lynn Anderson, Tiger Lily

“We try with all we have. We fight hands we can’t see. We stomp against the earth and chant all the right prayers, but sometimes it isn’t meant to be. You believe life will always be as it is, and you make plans, but the next thing you know, you’re climbing into a sinking boat in the dead of night because the land you love is no longer safe. The sun sets, the man you love doesn’t swim above the water again, and time runs out.” – Nina Moreno, Don’t Date Rosa Santos

“Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?” – J. K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

“It takes a lot of wanting to get out of a place like this, though. It takes wanting so bad, it’s all you care about, all you dream about, all you breathe. Some days it takes more wanting than I’ve got.” – Cath Crowley, A Little Wanting Song

“The way he watches me is physical – a pressure on my skin. He is so tender, so immediate, and I am only good at wanting things from a safe distance.” – Brenna Yovanoff, Places No One Knows

“Happiness takes as much practice as unhappiness does. It’s by living that you live more. By waiting you wait more. Every waiting day makes your life a little less. Every lonely day makes you a little smaller. Every day you put off your life makes you less capable of living it.” – Ann Brashares, Sisterhood Everlasting

“I stopped for a second. If you remember everything, I wanted to say, and if you are really like me, then before you leave tomorrow, or when you’re just ready to shut the door of the taxi and have already said goodbye to everyone else and there’s not a thing left to say in this life, then, just this once, turn to me, even in jest, or as an afterthought, which would have meant everything to me when we were together, and, as you did back then, look me in the face, hold my gaze, and call me by your name.” – Andre Aciman, Call Me By Your Name

What are your favourite book quotes? Have you read any of these books? Let me know in the comments 🙂

  1. I love that you keep notebooks for writing down quotes from books. It’s something I’ve always thought about doing and then just never stick with it. And it paid off this week, because all of these are brilliant! I haven’t read Call Me By Your Name since I was in high school, but that section takes me right back to those pages.

  2. One of my favorite things to annotate are quotes. I always forget them but now that I’m flagging them, it helps so much when I go to review. Such great quotes here! Quotes are a great post because they always pull me into books and make my TBR grow. lol!
